The Great Wall Restaurant was originally set up back in 2003 by experienced cooks Suzanne and Simon Wan when they purchased the Boot and Shoe pub. Due to the awful state the property was in, capital invested for a refurbishment was redirected into maintaining the building. Although the state of the decor was of a low standard Simon and Suzanne worked very hard to try and maintain the food quality and it was clear to see that customers would return purely because of the food standard.
It wasn't until 2005 when Simon and Suzanne's son Alex got involved with the business. Alex had just graduated from university with an Honours degree in Business and I.T and opted to take on the challenge of transforming the property. Together with his wife, Fei, Alex organised a plan of action to convert the pub into a restaurant. After months of liasing with the architect plans were finally submitted and permission was granted to give the property a full-scale revamp.
8 skips, tons of sand and cement and bucket loads of paint later (the list could go on and on) refurbishment had been completed. In summer of 2006 not only did the building have a make-over so did the car park, farewell to the peeling tarmac which looked like an eyesore even before stepping into the old public house. A fabulous pagoda style porch was built in order to give a grand look to the restaurant and inside it clear to see that effort was put in to give the restaurant a modern look and contemporary feel.
The restaurant reopened in July 2006 and to celebrate the opening customers new and old were invited to peruse the restaurant and witness the magnificent changes. The Sheriff of Nottingham was at hand to formally open the restaurant and there was a firecracker display and a traditional lion dance to bring good luck and fortune to the business and those around. The night was a huge success resulting in raising just under £1000 for Lord Mayor of Nottingham's charity.
